With this project we expect to improve the accessibility of many contents for deaf people who use the Spanish Sign Language (LSE).
After all the supports obtained, XUL and the Technological Institute of Castilla and Leon (ITCL) have signed an agreement to extend the service in more than 1,500 signs for our interpreter, Maya, and also to create a new web translation service in real time.
By signing this contract, in addition to the clear commitment with this project by XUL and ITCL, it will provide more useful translations for our interpreter, as Maya will increase its vocabulary from 350 to nearly 2,500 words. With this expansion and the new service that will be developed, XUL´s project will go from a prototype to a fully marketable product.
The project is being presented in several forums with great hosting, highlighting the SIMO fair, in which it won the “15 minutes of glory” project, as well as the Broadcast IT fair, CARVI 2011 congress, and many media appearances.

TCL has worked with the Social Communication Cordobesa XUL to create a tool for converting text into sign language. XUL is responsible for the translation of text into sign language, while ITCL is responsible for the representation of signs through a virtual character in real time.
The virtual interpreter is able to reproduce the requested sentences through sign language. For this purpose, it is used a list composed of 350 signs, which is now trying to expand. Those signs or words that are not in this list are spelled. The translator allows two main uses, to export the sentences into formatted video to be integrated into any website, or real-time visualization as a training tool to see the virtual interpreter from any position and learn the realization of the signs.
The real-time application allows to modify the point of view from which the translator is seen. You can also visualize each individual sign as well, in order to clearly distinguish one from other, or see them with natural transitions as done in the real world.
